Brand and Culture: [travel] 더블린 시티 가이드 앱, 마이 더블린(My Dublin ) 그리고 나의 서울

영국에서 아일랜드로 넘어오기 직전에 아이폰에 더블린 폴더를 만들고, 열개 정도의 시티 가이드 앱을 다운 받아 놓았었다. 그 중 거의 마지막에서야 열어 본 '마이 더블린(My Dublin)'을 삼일만 먼저 봤더라도 지루했던 더블린 여행이 그나마 좀 나아졌을텐데 하는 후회가 밀려온다.

지금 더블린 폴더에 남아있는 앱은 PocketGuide, Free...Walks, iGuide Dublin, My Dublin, Dnote Ireland, Culturefox 이렇게 6개인데, 대부분 어느 도시에나 있는 적당히 유용한, 있으면 보지 않고 없으면 아쉬운 관공서용, 혹은 여행사나 여행 서적이 자신을 홍보하기 위한 앱들이다. 그중 색깔이 조금 다른 '마이 더블린'은 자신을 더블리너라고 소개하는 Susan Byron이라는 사람의 개인 결과물 같다.

더블린의 대표 관광지 10개를 순위를 매겨 소개하고 있는데, 그 관광지의 배경 설명과 함께 자신의 혹은 더블리너의 입장을 말해준다. 정보의 나열만 있는게 아니라 그 도시에 사는 개인의 관점이 녹아져 있다보니 더욱 흥미롭고 신뢰가 간다. 게다가 각 관광지마다 주변의 (더블리너가 좋아한다는) 카페나 펍, 레스토랑, 작은 볼거리 등도 알차다.

10개의 추천지 중 1번인 더블린 성은 이렇게 소개 된다.

Dublin Castle is quite the fairytale inside and out. Massive medieval fortress walls protect an inner sanctum of majestic staterooms, filled with enough fabulous artwork, furniture and crystal to please any King or Queen? The only thing is we Irish don’t do royalty, we even managed to mislay the crown jewels! The nearest we got to a truly noble figurehead was Michael Collins who received the keys of the castle in 1922 ending some 800 years of British rule and tenancy. The question then was, what would we do with it? Apart from being used as a centre of intelligence, Garda headquarters is still there it is now mainly used for elaborate state occasions.

And while it is open to the public with excellent informative guided tours conducted daily, not many Irish people seem to visit. Perhaps because it has always being deemed more of an English institution then an Irish tradition which is a shame as it is a great place to visit.

The Chapel Royal has only recently been reopened which has a very special ornate gothic interor. There is an enclosed medieval knot garden on the site of the original Dubh Linn or black pool at the epicentre of the original city where the castle cat still reigns peacefully over his minions.....

But the real jewel in the crown, see I told you we had them some, is the Chester Beatty Library in the grounds of Dublin Castle. It houses a wonderful collection of oriental art and rare manuscripts kindly donated by the man himself who was honoured with the first freedom of the city in.....Which inspired the cuisine in the Silk Road Cafe which is based on the delights of the Far East.....

밑줄 그은 문장들만 봐도 Susan Tyron이라는 사람의 (더블린을 잘 알리고 싶은) 의지가 엿보인다. 거의 모든 더블린을 소개하는 책이나 자료에서 더블린 성은 오래된 역사와 아름다운 성의 모습에 감탄하라고 알려준다. 그러나 나에게는 이런 정보보다 더블린 성이 더블리너에게는 수치스러운 역사의 단면이라는 점이 더 흥미롭다.

12페이지 정도밖에 안 되는 앱이지만 한 페이지마다 이런 흥미롭고 다른 앱이나 책에서는 볼 수 없는 정보들이 가득하다. 휴레인 갤러리(Hue Lane Gallery)를 소개할 때에도 이 갤러리를 아끼는 개인적인 이유와 휴레인 갤러리의 시작을 둘러싼 비화들도 들려준다.

그녀가 추천한 주요 관광지 주변의 작은 펍이나 샵들도 거의가 만족스러웠다. 가장 훌륭했던 추천지는 기네스 공장(Guinness Storehouse) 5층에 있는 레스토랑에서 '기네스 비프 스튜 먹기'! 더블린에 다시 가고 싶게 만들 정도의 맛이라면 믿을까?

'마이 더블린'을 보고 컨텐츠 자체에 흥분하기도 했지만, 서울에도 이런 앱이 있다면 얼마나 좋을까 하는 생각이 앞섰다. 대다수의 여행객이 스마트폰을 들고 서울에 방문하는 이상, 그 중 다수가 서울의 지하철 맵이라도 다운받기 위해 앱스토어에 접속해서 'Seoul'이라는 검색어를 입력할 것이다. 내가 모든 도시에서 그러는 것처럼.

우리가 일본의 지배 하에 있었던 것과는 비교도 할 수 없을 정도로 오랜시간(길게는 800년까지 본다)을 영국의 지배를 받았지만, 카톨릭 교도로서 그리고 켈트족으로서의 자존심을 지킨 나라 아일랜드. 이들 역시 우리 만큼이나 바꾸고 싶은 외부의 시선이나 왜곡된 정보가 많을 것이다. 그런 의미에서 Susan Byron의 이 앱 하나는 타임스퀘어에서 볼 수 있었다는 '독도는 우리 땅' 광고와 다르지 않다. 그리고 개인적으로는 독도는 우리땅 광고처럼 불특정 다수에게 PUSH하는 방법도 좋지만, 어떤 이유로든 한국을 방문한 외국인에게 이런 솔찍한 우리의 생각을 말하며 끌어당기는 것(PULL)이 더 낫지 않나 하는 생각이다.

그래서! 영어 공부를 열심히 해서, 내가 만들어 보기로 마음 먹었다. 컨텐츠를 고민하기도 전에 마음에 드는 (벤치마킹 용) 앱을 발견했다. 페이지 구성은 파리를 소개하는 앱, MyLittleParis처럼 만들고 싶다. 앱스토어에서 검색해서 다운받은 후, 이 귀여운 앱을 만지작만지작 하고 있으면 혼잣말로 '아... 파리 가고싶다...'라고 말하고 있을지 모른다. 불어로 되어 있어서 무슨 말이지는 모르지만, 이런 구성이면 보기도 편하고, 소셜 미디어와 연동도 잘 되고, 무엇보다 예뻐서 분명 인기도 많을 거다.
